_RECORD BREAKING WEEKEND FOR CATALINA SWIMMERS AT ALBERTA AGE GROUP CHAMPS

_(March 15th, 2011)
Twenty-four Red Deer Catalina swimmers attended the Speedo 2011 Alberta Age Group Provincials at the newly renovated Talisman Center in Calgary, Alberta March 11-13. The team of 8 boys and 16 girls aged 10 to 14 years old represented Red Deer Catalina swimmers well coming in second in the Middle Team (teams of 100 members or less) division, and finished 6th overall! (Catalina finished 9th last year, and has finished no higher than 8th overall in the previous 7 years)

Ten year old Rebecca Smith stole the spotlight winning 8 gold medals, breaking 7 club records, setting 6 NEW PROVINCIAL RECORDS and tieing a CANADIAN RECORD!! Two of the records she broke (50 free and 200 IM) were older that she is!! New provincial records for Rebecca Smith were 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 400 free, 200 IM, and 50fly. Not only did Rebecca set Provincial records, the times she posted in all 8 of the events that she swam were the fastest 10 and under times in the country this year making her the fastest 10 year old in Canada, and her 200 I.M. time tied the Canadian Record.

"This group of swimmers is the future of Catalina and Alberta swimming. Our program proved to be one of the best in the province this weekend and is showing Alberta and the rest of the country that Red Deer Swimmers want to be on the top of the podium!!" says Head Coach Mandi Smith of her team's successes over the weekend.

Other Highlights included: Gold Medal finishes for Rebecca Smith, 10 (50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 400 free, 50 back, 100 back, 50 fly, and 200 IM) and Madalyn Smith, 12 (50 breast, 100 breast, 200 breast). Silver Medal finishes for Emma MacDermaid, 12 (1500 free) and Kristen Trepanier, 11 (200 fly, 400 IM). Bronze Medal finishes for Emma MacDermaid, 12 (800 free, 400 free, 50 free), Breana Menzel, 12 (50 Breast), and Kristen Trepanier, 11 (100 Fly). Red Deer Catalina Club records for Rebecca Smith, 10(50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 400 free, 200 IM, 50fly), Madalyn Smith, 12 (50 breast, 100 Breast) and the 11 and 12 Girls relay consisting of Rebecca Smith, Kristen Trepanier, Madalyn Smith, and Emma MacDermaid (4x50 M.R, 4x50 F.R, 4x100 F.R).
